Disappointment For Nigeria As Only Simon, Amoo Make CAF Awards List

Must read

This is not the best of times for Nigerian football as only two Nigerian players, Moses Simon and Akinwunmi Amoo managed to make the first list of nominees for the 2022 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.

The continental body yesterday released the first list of nominees for the 2022 Awards which will be held on July 21, 2022 in Rabat, Morocco.

The revealed nominees are mainly for the Men’s categories namely Player of the Year, Interclub Player of the Year, Young Player of the National Team of the Year and Club of the Year.

CAF shunned the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the list of the Best Male national teams in the continent which has Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea and The Gambia. Others are Mali, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.

In the same vein, Nigeria was left out in the category of the club of the year (men) just as no Nigerian coach was named in the Coach of the Year in the men’s category.

It was the same for the Interclub Player of the Year (men) as no Nigerian player from the local scene was listed.

However, Moses Simon and Akinwunmi Amoo are the only two Nigerians in the list. Both men were listed in the Player of the Year (Men) and Young Player of the Year (Men) respectively.

The CAF Awards 2022 will be held ahead of the final of Africa’s flagship women’s competitions, TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022 scheduled to take place between July 2– July 23, 2022.
