President Bola Tinubu has received the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following their silver medal-winning performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
The president welcomed the team to the State House Council Chambers on Tuesday, a few hours after they arrived in Nigeria from Abidjan.
Nigeria lost 2-1 to Cote d’Ivoire’s Elephants in the AFCON final on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium in Ebimpe, Abidjan.
Nigeria took the lead in the first half thanks to a powerful header from William Troost-Ekong, but the Ivorians responded with goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller in the second.
All Eagles members and officials were in attendance at the statehouse.
The Super Eagles arrived in the country during the early hours of Tuesday. A sizable crowd greeted the players with miniature Nigerian flags. The fans clapped and cheered as the players descended from the plane.
