NILOWV Port Harcourt chapter advocates for Special Reservation of Seats for women in governance

The Chairperson of Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV), Rivers state Chapter, Mrs Ruth Davies-Ibiamu, is advocating for Special Reservation of Seats for Women in governance at all levels.

Ibiamu stated this when she led members of NILOWV on a courtesy visit to the Sole Administrator of Port Harcourt City Council and Mayor of Port Harcourt,Dr. Sam Kalagbor in his office.

The Chairperson of NILOWV who presented the request symbolised by a placard titled “Special Reservation of Seats for Women ” to the Mayor, said the groups advocacy for giving women elective positions is to enhance their participation in bringing democratic governance closer to the people.

The Mayor of Port Harcourt, Dr. Sam Kalagbor, wholeheartedly endorsed the special seat reservation for women. He said: “ In my capacity as the Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Council of Rivers State, I endorse the Special Seat Reservation for Women at all levels.”

The endorsement by the Mayor of Port Harcourt is a significant step towards promoting women’s participation in governance in the state.

The NILOWV team also paid a courtesy visit to the former Secretary to the State Government and former Minister of Transportation, Dr. Abiye Precious Sekibo.

Mrs Ibiamu reiterated the values and roles women play in the democratic emergence of leaders by casting their votes and asked for support for the inclusivity of women into elective positions in Nigeria.She said: “When women take the reins, societies tend to become more just and peaceful. Women bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table, leading to more inclusive decision-making.”

The Nigerian League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation that aims to promote democracy, educate voters, and advocate for social and political change in Nigeria. The group’s motto, “Together we can, Yes we can,” reflects its commitment to empowering women and promoting inclusive governance.
