FG seek strategic partnership with Intl. Donor Agencies to develop steel sector

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shaiubu Abubakar Audu,has said the Federal Government is collaborating with Development Partners and International Donor Agencies operating in Nigeria to bolster the development of a robust and competitive steel industry.

The Minister stated this while receiving the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leilani Bin-Juda,and the Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, at the Ministrys Headquarters in Abuja.

Audu in a statement recognised the crucial role that Development Partners and International Donor Agencies play in supporting key sectors, including infrastructure development, skills training, and technological advancements.

“Your partnership can accelerate the modernisation of our steel assets, build the required infrastructure, empower our workforce with the skills of tomorrow, and fortify the regulatory frameworks that will underpin our industry’s growth. Together, we have the opportunity to create a legacy of sustainable development, job creation, and industrial innovation that will resonate across generations”.Audu said.

According to him, by supporting the revitalisation of key steel assets and infrastructure and championing regulatory and trade reforms, the partners would be contributing to a cause that is not only about industrial progress but national rejuvenation.He stated that the partners commitment will help unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s steel sector, reduce the country’s reliance on imports and foster local innovation.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu reiterated the Ministry’s need for  prospective partners who will help address the daunting task facing the sector, noting that ultimately, the partnership will contribute to building a more prosperous and sustainable future for all Nigerians.

In her remarks, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leilani Bin-Juda welcomed the initiative by the Ministry for synergy. She stated that Australia is committed to supporting Nigeria’s steel development agenda.According to her, a strong steel sector is fundamental to achieving economic diversification and sustainable growth, adding that they look forward to working closely with the Ministry to achieve these shared goals.

Speaking, Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, who was represented by Udumma Nwokike, Climate Change Programme Analyst, UNDP, disclosed that UNDP is open for collaboration and partnership as the areas the Ministry is seeking to collaborate, fully aligns with UNDP’s vision. 

Also, Dr. Osuji Otu, from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation stated that UNIDO is  committed to partner with the Ministry to promote investment for the steel sector.
