The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered instant review of increases in tariffs from Wednesday, April 3.

This was announced by NERC Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni on Wednesday during a press conference in Abuja.

According to Oseni, only Band A customers who represent 15 percent of the population but receive an average daily electricity supply of 20 hours or more would be subjected to the new rates.

He said, “We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled ‘April Supplementary Order’ and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour.”

In NERC’s January report, it was revealed that the Federal Government would spend up to N1.6 trillion in 2024 to subsidize electricity.
