Nigerians have been urged to embrace their cultural values and transfer same to their children.
The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Niger State in the just concluded election, Hajiya Khadijah Abdullahi-Iya gave this charge while addressing parents and pupils at the National Day to mark Nigerias’ 63rd independence day celebration at of BlossomHall School Utako, Abuja.
“Teaching the children the significance of their heritage is one of the most important things we can give to them. African culture is beautiful and we are value- based people. Our values of honesty and integrity is what makes us who we are. We should own our culture and teach our children how to speak our languages too. I am glad that BlossomHall School is promoting our culture.
“As we celebrate our 63rd Independence anniversary,we should remember that as Nigeria has over 300 ethnic groups and tribes, we are one. And when we work together as one, we will build a greater nation. ” She said
The Director and Proprietress of BlossomHall School Mrs Adeola Remi-John, said the idea behind the National cultural day celebration was to showcase the diversity in Nigerias’ culture .
” At this year’s National/cultural day celebration,we deliberately wanted to showcase tribes in the North Central. That is the Nupe,Gbagyi,Berom,Koro,Tiv, Idoma,Nasarawa- Eggon and more. So,each class represented a tribe and they displayed, the dance, attire and values of the language to show that there is unity in diversity.”She said..
One of the parents, Mrs Abigail Agbonghae, said she was thrilled by the pupils performance.” Today, I was exposed to the culture of many tribes. The children embodied their roles dressing in different cultural attires , dancing and singing in the languages. Indeed, the children depicted our culture.” She said.
Another parent, Ova Abdulrahman said the Cultural day was very rich.””This tells so much about our identity i.e where we are coming from. The children made us see the various cultural dances from various tribes in the North Central and it was beautiful.”He said.
